Dog Weight Predictor

Predict adult weight from puppy weight and age.

How to Use the Dog Weight Predictor

Enter your puppy's current weight and age in weeks, then select their expected breed size category (small, medium, large, or giant). The calculator uses breed-size-specific growth curves to project adult weight. Results are most reliable after 8 weeks of age; very young puppies show too much individual variation for accurate prediction.

How Puppies Grow: Breed Size Differences

Small breeds (under 20 lbs adult) reach full weight by 8–12 months. Medium breeds (20–50 lbs) typically finish growing by 12–15 months. Large breeds (50–90 lbs) may continue filling out until 18 months. Giant breeds (90+ lbs, e.g., Great Danes, Mastiffs) can take 18–24 months to reach full adult size. Larger breeds have a longer growth window, so their puppies look "skinny" for longer — this is normal and does not indicate underfeeding.

Common Prediction Methods

The most widely used rule for medium breeds: double the puppy's weight at 4 months to estimate adult weight. For small breeds, doubling the 6-week weight is a reasonable starting point. For large and giant breeds, these simple rules are less accurate; growth curve formulas based on breed size and weekly weight tracking give better estimates. Mixed-breed dogs are harder to predict — DNA breed tests can hint at size but do not guarantee accuracy.

Growth Milestones to Track

Weigh your puppy weekly for the first 3 months, then monthly. Consistent weight gain in a healthy range signals good nutrition and health. Sudden slowdowns or plateaus may indicate illness or parasites. A puppy should not lose weight week over week. If growth deviates significantly from the predicted curve, consult your vet — some breeds have specific growth-related conditions (e.g., large breeds are prone to hypertrophic osteodystrophy if overfed during growth).

Practical Uses of the Prediction

Knowing your puppy's expected adult weight helps you buy the right-sized crate (adults should stand, turn, and lie flat), choose a food formulated for the correct adult size (large-breed puppy food has different calcium ratios to support slower bone development), and estimate future costs for flea/tick prevention and medications dosed by weight.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the adult weight prediction?

Growth curves give a reasonable estimate but individual genetics, nutrition, and health affect the final weight. Best used as a planning guide.

What is the minimum age to predict?

Predictions become more reliable from 6 weeks onward. Very young puppies have too much variation.
